Heat Safety Tips From Experts (and Sean), Why Guys Dump Girls 07-31-2007
It's HOT this week with highs in the 90's. It's been awhile since we had hot temps, so we have some safety tips for you. We also shared Tuesday the top ten reasons guys dump girls. All of this and more and we also previewed the second band in this year's battle of the bands, Sin City.
Tips To Beat The Heat Steaming temperatures are especially dangerous for the elderly, anyone can fall prey to heatstroke, the most serious heat-triggered illness. Heatstroke strikes when the body's temperature soars above 104 degrees. The symptoms are hot dry skin, rapid pulse, a throbbing headache, nausea and confusion.
Here are 10 tips on how to beat the heat from experts:
- Drink plenty of fluids. Sports drinks like Gatorade help replace electrolytes that you lose when you sweat.
- Avoid alcoholic beverages and caffeinated drinks since they promote dehydration.
- Wear appropriate clothing and sunscreen. Lightweight, light colored clothes of natural, breathable fibers like cotton are best.
- Plan outdoor activities for the coolest times of the day, usually first thing in the morning or late at night.
- Pace yourself when working or playing outdoors. If you feel your heart pounding, get into the shade. Children should rest after 30 minutes of play.
- Stay indoors as much as possible. If you don't have air-conditioning, go to a public library, mall or heat-relief shelter.
- Don't ever leave kids or pets in cars. Even with windows open a crack, the temperature can become deadly in minutes.
- Avoid hot foods, which raise body temperature.
- Wear visors and hats that shade the face. Shield infants and children with an umbrella.
- Ask a pharmacist about medications. Some substances inhibit sweat or aggravate heat related conditions.
And one tip from Sean, who is clearly not an expert. If you or your child is involved in activities outside, like football camp, get started early protecting yourself. About an hour before the activity begins, start drinking water, at least a large water bottle full. This will get you fully hydrated before you start sweating, giving you a head start. Mikael started doing this a couple years ago and he no longer gets sick during sports like he used to.
Top 10 Reasons Guys Dump Women Guys often leave their lovers without explaining exactly what when wrong, leaving gals to scratch their heads.
According to Robert Greene, author of "The Art of Seduction," here are the top 10 reasons men dump their lovers.
- Bad Sex -- Guys would never say it, but bad chemistry in bed can make a man flee.
- Man of Mystery -- Men crave fantasies, and once the mystery of a new woman is gone, he may turn his lustful fantasies to other women.
- Movin' On Up -- If a guy has a sudden move up in the world, he often finds women within reach who were way out of his class, and he finds being seen with his old lover to be an embarrassment.
- Mission Control -- Men like to wield the power; and if the gal makes more money or is better educated, he can feel inferior. This feeling of emasculation can make him leave on the double.
- Breathing Room -- Clinging jealous women can smother a man, and most guys need space. If a guy feels suffocated, he will often find a new partner.
- The Other Woman -- Sometimes, a guy will start a relationship with a woman when he already has his heart set on someone else. If the object of his desire suddenly falls for him, he will dump his current woman for her.
- Mismatches -- If a gal doesn't live up to what a guy thought she was when they first met, he will dump her.
- Out of Shape -- If a gal packs on pounds and stops looking pretty for him, a guy will often get a roving eye.
- Drama Queen -- Guys like excitement at the beginning of a relationship, but then they like to settle down into an area of calm. Women who constantly stir things up can drive a man away.
- Men are Boys -- Some men are attracted to girlish spirit, and if his woman turns too grown up and stops being silly and adventurous, he can leave and find another, usually younger, lover.
Thought For The Day When lightning strikes the ocean why don't all the fish die?
Weather Kid Today's Weather Kid from Epworth Preschool & Daycare was Nikea. I sure hope I spelled her name right. She was nervous because it was only her second day at Epworth, but she did a great job.
