Beach Calorie Burning, Body Language Speaks, Baby Names
07-23-2007

Monday we learned that burning calories at the beach can be easy...as easy as putting on sun block. Men and women can tell if there is romantic interest from body language. Oh, and if you name your kids certain names...you're a freak.

Burning Calories At The Beach
(Women's Health) Hitting the beach doesn't have to mean hitting pause on your workout. Here's how many calories you'll burn per hour doing seven different summertime activities:

  • 540 calories - Swimming in the ocean
  • 480 calories - Waterskiing
  • 480 calories - Playing beach volleyball
  • 240 calories - Playing Frisbee with your dog
  • 120 calories - Building a sand castle
  • 60 calories - Reading a book
  • 30 calories - Applying sunscreen

Men and Women - Body Language Speaks
Here are the most common body poses that show interest from a member of the opposite sex, according to behavioral expert David Lewis.

If a woman is attracted to you she:

  • Opens her lips then licks them.
  • Flicks her hair back with her hand or a toss of her head.
  • Gazes at you for longer than a few seconds.
  • Massages her head or neck with one hand.
  • Crosses and uncrosses her legs.
  • Points her knee toward you if she's sitting with one leg tucked under the other.
  • Makes small agitated movements with her fingers and hands.

If a man is interested in you, he:

  • Massages his outer thigh while you're with him.
  • Makes preening gestures, often by adjusting his tie, fiddling with his collar, arranging his cuff links, flicking dust from his jacket or smoothing his hair.
  • Narrows his eyes while you're speaking with him.
  • Hooks his thumbs into his belt in a cowpoke pose that's meant to look more manly.
  • Strokes his jawline as he looks at you.
  • Tries to make eye contact with you in a relaxed friendly manner.
  • Plays with a cylindrical object such as a glass or a pen while he's speaking with you.

Baby's Name Shows Parent's Personality
Developmental psychologist Kelly McFatter surveyed new parents and found surprising clues to their personalities in the names they gave their children.

Here are some baby names and what they say about parents, according to McFatter:

  • Common names -- Mary, Susan, John Michael -- mean you're simple, straightforward and direct. You get along with others and you don't like to rock the boat. You're easygoing, but more ambitious than you sometimes like to admit.
  • Eccentric names -- Blossom, Moonglow, Sunshine, Zowie -- indicate you crave the spotlight and like to break rules, but you're not as unconventional as you think. You place a great deal of importance on what other people think.
  • Old-fashioned names -- Beatrice, Mabel, Eldon, Herman -- suggest you reject fads and trends, and make choices based on what pleases you. You're hard-working and set high standards for yourself, but sometimes you expect too much.
  • Ethnic names -- Aisha, Sofia, Antonio, Jaleel -- mean you're obviously proud of your heritage and place great importance on family. You make friends easily and are generous and affectionate, but sometimes you try too hard to please.
  • Fad names -- Ashley, Britney, Brett, Justin -- mean you're impulsive and tend to follow the crowd, and you can be too trusting. But you're also creative and open minded, especially if you use unusual spellings like "Tania" instead of "Tanya."
  • Aristocratic names -- Henderson, Walker, Archibald -- indicate that you're very ambitious and have impressive goals, and you're willing to work to reach them. You think carefully before making decisions. You're a loner, but you may sometimes seem standoffish.
