Hoops for Hope is back for their third year in a row. The group is raising money for the American Cancer Society and two of the organizers stopped by the show Tuesday. We also talked about the missing women in northern Ohio and a child rapist who wants released to spend time with his new wife...yeah, that's what we thought.
Hoops For Hope
Hoops For Hope is July 14 at River Valley JR/SR High School. The three-on-three tournament raises money for Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society.
Julie Hoover and her niece Tami Alexander stopped in today to talk about the annual event, but brought some sad news with them as well.
The leader of their Hoops group, Jerry Fetter, passed away on April 17 after battling cancer for nearly five years.
Julie says it was Jerry's love of basketball that led us to start our Hoops-For-Hope Charity Basketball Tournament. With his inspiration in mind, they hope this year's tournament will be even bigger than ever in his spirit.
The registration deadline is June 25. Prior to that, the fee is $80 per team. After that date, you can still register, but the fee is $100 per team.
Each team consists of four members, three of which are playing at any one time. Boys and girls are both welcome, but no co-ed teams. The age limit is up to 18 years old.
As the girls said today, at Hoops for Hope, "You're not just playing for a trophy, you're playing for a cause!"
You can register online and/or get more information at their website www.hoops-for-hope.com.
Convicted Twice Of Child Rape, Man Has New Wife
We were amazed by this story. Not only is the guy a twisted individual who should be in jail for the rest of his life, but the details about his life are just bizarre. Of course, because of various reasons, he will not be in jail for the rest of his life. But he does have a brand new wife...even after serving time for child rape.
The following is the article from the AP.
Michael Kairis pleaded guilty Monday to rape and gross sexual imposition in a deal with the Franklin County prosecutor's office, which agreed not to seek a life sentence so the girl could avoid testifying in court.
Kairis, 33, of Columbus, faces up to 11 1/2 in prison at sentencing July 11.
Common Pleas Judge John Bessey rejected a request Monday from defense attorney Timothy Pierce to release Kairis from the county jail and place him on house arrest until sentencing so he could care for sick relatives and spend time with his new wife.
Brant Cook, an assistant county prosecutor, said Kairis met the girl's mother in August after he contacted the woman through MySpace.com and set up a date. The woman's Web page mentioned she had a daughter, Cook said.
Kairis was convicted of gross sexual imposition and labeled a sexual predator in August 2000 after he pleaded guilty to molesting an 8-year-old relative. He was paroled in 2003.
Pregnant Woman Disappears, 2-Year-Old Left Behind
Another strange story in the news, which is making national headlines, is the disappearance of a woman, nine months pregnant, from North Canton, Ohio. Her 2-year-old son was found alone in the house after her mother had not heard from her in a little over a day.
