Carol Niedhart popped in dark and early Monday morning to help us launch Summer Tour 2007. Some people are saying gas prices aren't high enough (yeah, right) and it's Meet a Mate Week.
Summer Tour 2007
We kicked off the WDCM Summer Tour 2007 today. If you remember last year's summer tour, this is a bit different.
We are highlighting the many communities around Marion County. Each week we will explore, and visit a different area of Marion. On Thursdays, the Morning Show will broadcast live from the highlighted area.
This is Big Island and Espyville Week on WDCM. Next week we move onto Meeker and DeCliff.
We learned about Big Island's fight to be the County Seat, bald eagles, how it got it's name, and more. Tune in to WDCM all day this week for tons of tidbits.
Meet A Mate Week - June 11-17
Time to get out and meet your special someone. The idea is to get enough people around the U.S. to get out there so they run into each other.
A recent Internet survey for Chanel of 1,500 college students ages 17-21 and young professionals ages 22-29, revealed that while a majority are willing to take chances to meet the love of their lives, the rules of the dating game have not changed.
- 58% believed in love at first sight
- 31% said they would take a chance on love
- 23% said they would take a chance on traveling around the world
- 18% said they would take a chance in owning their own business
- 61% prefer to ask someone out in person, 18% prefer to ask someone out over the phone and 7% via e-mail
- 61% of young adults wait 2-3 days following a first date to set up the second.
- 35% cite hair as the most important physical factor in the search for love, while 24% consider fragrance to be the most essential date item.
Other findings include the following:
- If money were no object, young adults would choose a romantic getaway to Venice with their significant other (34%) vs. lounging on a beach in St. Barths (26%); clubbing in London (12%); taking an African safari (11%); or shopping in Paris (9%).
- If given an opportunity to choose their lover's profession, young adults would prefer a business leader/financial tycoon (38%) or a prominent doctor (18%) vs. a professional athlete (8%), supermodel (9%) or rock star (7%).
- While both men and women are most likely to choose a business leader/financial tycoon as a "dream lover," women would select a doctor as a second choice (19%), while men would choose a supermodel (17%).
Stop Complaining...Gas Prices Not High Enough
There is a group of people out there that want you to stop complaining about high gas prices. They say prices aren't nearly high enough. In fact, they say that $10 a gallon is about right.
“It’s arguable that the price of gasoline could be legitimately much higher than it is,” said Richard Stuebi, an energy and environmental advancement fellow at the Cleveland Foundation. “If I were president, I would suggest that over the next five years, every year gas taxes would go up by 50 cents.” After 2012, they should go up a dollar a year, he said.
For elected officials, adopting Stuebi’s position would be political suicide. For the people who elect them, it’s a suggestion bordering on the insane.
But for Stuebi — whose job is safe from the voting public — raising the price of gasoline is the only way to tear the nation away from a reliance on a fuel that is increasingly hard to extract from the earth, often comes from unstable countries and is blamed for contributing to the heating of the planet.
